Her sign for 'hotdog' 🤣🤣🤣🤣! Love it, fun and helpful video. Thank you!
Hey Bill, watching a lot of your lessons lately. The closed captions have been really helpful in learning and I would really appreciate them for this video if you would be able to make it happen. Few times there I was a bit lost with what was trying to be conveyed
55:33 so funny, lmao
i want to learn sigh and i like this because even if normally i have to have something playing in the background all the time but i can watch this without that
I'm not sure if you still read these comments, but I've been going through the lessons & am trying to do about one a week, and this week was the first time that I saw you sign something & immediately knew what it meant!! I didn't have to consciously think through what you were signing, I just saw you do it and my brain provided the meaning! Thank you so much for putting these on the internet - it's honestly more helpful than the classes I took in undergrad.
I absolutely still read these comments and will do so until I die and/or lose my eyesight (or enough braincells to read). Thanks for the nice comment. Best wishes in your studies! I would do just about anything to be in a live class with Dr. Bill. I took ASL at Mendocino College but there isn't another in-person class until next spring (2025) so I am studying online. I don't have any Deaf friends yet but maybe someday. I live in a rural area so there aren't many Deaf events, sadly. I just finished ASL 1 with Lifeprint and am starting ASL 2. I'm wondering how many words I know out of 10,000 or if I would be able to have a somewhat normal conversation. Thank you for all your videos and all the sharing. One of my favorite videos is the idiom one. I know how to sign "standing ovation" now and a bunch of other sayings. I love ASL and this online school.
who all is here after watching coda?
Page friend love Brianna Jones 🥰🤟 good can see house 🏠 sleep bed night
Nothing like a video without sound to remind me I have Tinnitus. 😅
Thanks I live in the Caribbean Trinidad and Tobago am learning to sign.
Does anyone know the sign Katelyn makes at 32:20? The thing she likes to do for play?
Never mind, found it in a comment from three years ago, it is "running".
Thank you.
I kept saying "dale" with a Mexican accent and was SOOO confused because that's not a name
I could see the people in the back interpreting too
The sign should each have been repeated a 2nd time and slower
Finally learning sign language for autistic verbal shut downs and this is very helpful Thank you so much
25 and HoH Finally learning ASL
great review, thanks Bill!
At what point in the Lifeprint lessons are classifiers introduced? Or when should I introduce classifiers into the curriculum? I’m not a teacher, but relearning myself after initially learning ASL almost a decade ago.
I recommend going through the master playlist (see item two in the list below). Skip any videos that are repeats or that are of content that you are already familiar with. Then eventually the classifiers series will appear as part of that playlist. After a person has gone through Lessons 1 thru 60 -- at that point it isn't overly important what order they do the various "vocabulary expansion" videos. At my former day job the ASL program allowed students to take classifiers concurrently with ASL 3. However, I noticed some of the other faculty ended up focusing more on the advanced students in the course (to the detriment of some of the students who had only completed ASL 2). If you think about it though, classifiers (like most topics) shouldn't necessarily be lumped together and taught all in one dump. Rather, classifiers should be introduced "organically" throughout a progressive series of lessons. For example, a great time to introduce the aspect of CL:1 representing a person -- would be within the first few lessons along with the sign "meet." An instructor doesn't need to dive into a full blown discussion of classifiers -- and can instead just mention that a specified handshape (such as an upright "1" handshape) can be used to convey certain types of information (such as "meeting someone"). A good time to introduce the "flat hand" classifier might be when the instructor teaches the sign for "paper" and again when they teach "floor" and/or "shelf." The challenging aspect of such organic introduction to classifiers is that signs like "paper" and "shelf" are not classifiers but rather they are "signs" (that happen to be frozen classifiers). _____________________ How to use ASL University to learn sign language for free: 1. I've known the alphabet for years and still can barely recognize the signs and get crazy confused when I try to spell words. I need to spend more time practicing. This comment will hopefully make these videos show up in my feed so I can build the habit.
Dr. Vicars has a tool for fingerspelling practice on his website. I try to practice at least 50 words each day. I love it!
@@Maria-ix1up It's an awesome tool! Though, there's a Flemish version as well? I used it by accident once, and was perplexed. Still curious why it exists under Dr.Bill's domain.
@terminatort1014 That "Flemish" version of the Fingerspelling Practice Tool came into existence when a Flemish person asked me if they could use the tool using a list of Flemish words. I was just doing a favor for someone.
Thanks Dr. Bill and Marly...great video.
Reading finger spelling is so hard 😅
Hello! Greatings from Brazil 🇧🇷.

nice ASL video you’re a good teacher Bill she’s a good looking girl If I had to guess her age, I’d say late 20’s
I have worked with the Deaf community first hand for the past couple years and am noticing the accents I've picked up on from them. Some signs I choose from environmental influence, others I pick just because it feels right-- I learned for 5 years before my job so it's a mix of classroom signing and real world conversation. Anyway, the sign for 'UA-cam' that I see is the same as 'filming' but with a Y hand shape, palm faced outward instead of to the side like shown in this video. So fun to see how uniquely language evolves in ASL based on region, culture, and exposure to media. Thanks for the helpful video!
Thanks for commenting. The sign UA-cam has evolved and continues to evolve. Does the version you are seeing look like this? See: ua-cam.com/video/IudwA6TRdVI/v-deo.html Also, when referring to specific signs in one of the longer videos it helps to include a time code in 0:00 format. UA-cam converts that format into links directly to that time in the video and I can more easily see that to which you are referring (without having to watch the whole video). Instead of stating "palm faced outward" it might be good to describe which hand (dominant or non-dominant) faces "forward" (if you mean forward). Outward can be a bit ambiguous since it can also mean "outward to the side" as in "out to the side." Anyway, the other day I saw a skilled signer just jab a the thumb of a dominant-hand "Y" twice into the palm of a non-dominant flat hand (facing toward the dominant side with fingertips pointing up). Or in other words one or more Deaf have evolved the UA-cam sign beyond the circular movement to a slightly more specific touch-touch movement. Will be interesting to see how most people sign UA-cam ten years from now.
Hello, Dr. Bill! In ASL, is there a rule--formal or informal--dictating when one can combine a head shake with a sign to imply the NOT version of the sign? For example, to say "Don't know," it seems appropriate to combine a head shake with the sign for know. This seems appropriate for the sign "have," too. Yet we have different signs for "CAN" and "CAN'T." Why so? If you were to sign the word "CAN" with a head shake, would that be understood as "CAN'T"?
There is not a specific rule that can extend to easily cover all situations in which you can just shake your head to cause something to be negative. Instead a person ends up having to actually learn the language (thousands of signs) and be exposed to numerous language settings and situations and then eventually you "know" how to negate most common concepts. You can speed up that process a bit by reading about negation-related topics. www.lifeprint.com/asl101/pages-layout/reversaloforientationfornegation.htm www.lifeprint.com/asl101/pages-signs/n/negation.htm www.lifeprint.com/asl101/pages-layout/negation.htm
